Storm celebrates Anderson Cup Championship in 5-2 victory over Stars

Storm sets single-season wins record

KEARNEY, NE. – The Tri-City Storm celebrated an Anderson Cup Championship Friday night at the Viaero Center following a 5-2 win over the Lincoln Stars. The 2021-2022 Storm team set a new organizational record for the most wins (46), and most points (96) ever recorded in a regular season. Andrew Strathmann, John Druskinis, Jeremy Wilmer, Dane Dowiak, and Mitchell Miller all scored goals in the win for Tri-City. Arsenii Sergeev notched his league-leading 30th win of the year in goal for the Storm. The regular season championship was the third in organizational history. The Storm’s final game of the regular season is Saturday night in a road matchup against the Lincoln Stars at the Ice Box. Puck drop for tomorrow’s final game of the regular season is scheduled for 6:05pm CT.

 

The Storm and the Stars skated to a scoreless tie after Friday’s opening period. Storm goaltender Arsenii Sergeev and Stars goaltender Cameron Whitehead traded saves, and the period ended with the Stars outshooting the Storm by a 13-9 margin. Friday’s 2nd period began in a scoreless tie.

 

The opening goal of Friday’s game was netted by Lincoln’s Dalton Norris at 10:26 of the 2nd period. Aidan Thompson notched an assist on Thompson’s team-leading 26th goal of the season. Andrew Strathmann scored his fifth goal of the season at 13:57 of the 2nd period to bring the game to a 1-1 score. The Storm outshot the Stars by a 12-8 margin in the 2nd period, and Friday’s rivalry matchup entered the 3rd period in a tie.

 

Josh Druskinis scored his third goal of the year at 2:23 of Friday’s 3rd period to give Tri-City a 2-1 lead in the game. Druskinis’ goal was assisted by Tanner Adams. Gleb Veremyev answered back for the Stars with his 16th goal of the year at 5:29 of the period. The goal was notched on the powerplay and was assisted by Dalton Norris and Aidan Thompson. Jeremy Wilmer scored his 25th goal of the season at 6:04 of the 3rd period to give the Storm another one-goal lead in the game. Wilmer’s goal was assisted by Cole O’Hara and Vinny Borgesi. Dane Dowiak buried his 16th goal of the year seconds later to increase the Storm’s lead to two goals. Dowiak’s goal was his 16th of the season and was assisted by Mitchell Miller and Ilya Nikolaev. The final goal of Friday’s game was scored shorthanded by Mitchell Miller. Miller’s goal was his league-leading 39th of the season and was notched at 10:17 of the 3rd period. Tri-City outshot Lincoln 7-4 in the 3rd period, and 28-25 overall in the game.

 

Arsenii Sergeev improved to 30-6-1-1 on the season in goal for Tri-City after stopping 23 of Lincoln’s 25 shots on net in the game. Cameron Whitehead recorded the loss in net for the Stars after making 23 saves on 28 Storm shots.
