Storm win back to back games in 5-2 defeat of Omaha

Eckerle, Mazur, Ambrosio, Portz, Lagerstrom score in win

Kearney, NE – The Tri-City Storm defeated the Omaha Lancers by a final score of 5-2 Sunday evening at the Viaero Center. The Storm remained the 2nd place team in the Western Conference standings in the victory. Benji Eckerle, Carter Mazur, Colby Ambrosio, Nick Portz, and Jack Lagerstrom all scored in the game for Tri-City. The Storm return to action on Friday night in a road matchup against the Sioux City Musketeers. The game is the beginning of a stretch where the Storm will play four straight games on the road. The Storm’s next home game at the Viaero Center is February 21st against the Omaha Lancers. Benji Eckerle gave the Storm a 1-0 lead on an early goal assisted by Nick Capone and Mitchell Miller. The goal was scored at 3:20 of the 1st period and was Eckerle’s 14th of the 2019-2020 regular season. Carter Mazur gave the Storm shorthanded goals in back to back games minutes later. Mazur’s goal was scored at 5:16 of the period and was assisted by Mitchell Miller. With under two minutes to play in the 1st period, leading scorer Colby Ambrosio netted his 21st goal of the year to give Tri-City a 3-0 lead in the game. Ambrosio’s goal was scored at 18:35 of the 1st period and was assisted by Matthew Knies. Tri-City outshot Omaha 18-11 in the 1st period and carried a three-goal lead into the 2nd period.


Omaha’s Brian Silver scored his 7th goal of the season at 11:40 of the 2nd period to cut into the Storm’s lead. Seconds later, at 12:04 of the 2nd period, Tri-City scored again to retake a three-goal advantage. The goal was scored by Nick Portz and was assisted by Matthew Knies and Calvin Dybicz. Portz’s goal was his 12th of the year. Omaha outshot Tri-City 10-9 in the 2nd period, but couldn’t gain on the Storm’s lead, and trailed by three goals entering the 3rd period.


Jack Randl netted the Lancers’ 2nd goal of the game just over a minute into the 3rd period to bring the game to a 4-2 score. The two teams remained separated by two goals for much of the 3rd period until the Storm buried an empty net goal with less than three minutes to play. Jack Lagerstrom scored his 1st Career USHL Goal at 17:20 of the 3rd period to seal the win for the Storm. Todd Scott recorded the win in net, stopping 28 of Omaha’s 30 shots.
