GREEN BAY, Wis. – The league’s best penalty kill certainly knew how to score against the Tri-City Storm, as the Green Bay Gamblers scored two short-handed goals in the first period in route to the worst loss on the road for the Storm this season.
Green Bay (39-14-4, 82 pts – Tied for 1st in Eastern Conference) didn’t waste time to score the opening goal less than three minutes into the game, as Austin Czarnik scored the first of his two goals, which preceded short-handed goals by C.J. Eick and Alex Broadhurst. Czarnik scored his second goal with 53-seconds left in the opening period giving the Gamblers a 4-0 lead after one period.
The Gamblers scored three more goals in the second period with Eick scoring his second goal 3:24 into the period. Max Hartner and Jean-Paul LaFontaine each scored less than six-minutes later to extend the Gamblers lead to 7-0.
Tri-City (19-28-11, 49 pts – 8th in Western Conference) finally scored 48-seconds into the third period, as Justin Henry tallied his second goal of the season from Soren Jonzzon.
Travis Lynch would score the eighth goal of the night for the Gamblers with 7:54 remaining in regulation to close out the scoring for the game.
Storm goalie Christopher Holden (9-12-6) started the game and was pulled after allowing the first three goals for 15-minutes and came back in the second period finishing with 11 saves on 15 shots earning the loss. Scott Diebold (10-15-3) also made 11 saves on 15 shots in relief of Holden, while Adam Wilcox (15-6-1) made 21 saves on 22 shots in the win for Green Bay.
Tri-City went 0-for-5 on the power play, while going 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.
The Storm are on the road for one more game this season, which is at Lincoln next Friday night. Tri-City returns home for the season finale next Saturday against the Lincoln Stars.
Notes: The Storm finished the season 0-2-0 against Green Bay with a combined score 12-2… Tri-City is now winless in 10-consecutive games and 11-consecutive on the road… The Storm have only scored 17 first-goals this season, which is the fewest in the Western Conference… the eight goals allowed was the most on the road this season for the Storm, and the second time this season they have allowed eight goals in a game
