Dubuque clinches regular season Western Conference title with victory

DUBUQUE, Iowa – For the first time this season, the Tri-City Storm lost in regulation when leading after two periods (14-1-2), as the Dubuque Fighting Saints used a three-goal third period to clinch the Western Conference regular season title in their first season back in the USHL after a ten year absence.
After a scoreless first period, Dubuque (36-12-8, 80 pts – 1st in Western Conference) for the league-leading 39th time this season scored the game’s first-goal, as Tyler Lundey scored his eighth goal of the season for the Fighting Saints at the 7:14 mark in the second period.
Tri-City (19-27-11, 49 pts – 8th in Western Conference) responded with two goals in a span of exactly five-minutes apart beginning with Alex Carpenter’s seventh goal of the season at the 10:23 mark in the second period. Luke Sandler would score to give the Storm the lead with his first-career goal with Tri-City. Carpenter and Sandler ended the night with multi-point games, as both had a goal and assist.
The Fighting Saints got two goals early in the third period from T.J. Moor and T.J. Schlueter to give Dubuque the lead back, while John Gaudreau added an empty-net goal for his league-leading 36th of the season with 54-seconds left in regulation.
Storm Goalie Scott Diebold (10-15-3) made 28 saves on 31 shots in his fifth-consecutive loss in the crease for the Storm. Matt Morris (23-6-4) made 26 saves on 28 shots in the win for the Fighting Saints.
Tri-City went 0-for-2 on the power play, while going 1-for-1 on the penalty kill. Kenny Brooks had the only penalty in the game for the Storm, which was a season-low for Tri-City.
The Storm play the Green Bay Gamblers on Saturday night in Green Bay for the final time this season. Tri-City will return home for the season finale on Saturday, April 9th against the Lincoln Stars.
Notes: The Storm finish the season 0-2-0 against Dubuque… Tri-City is now winless in nine-consecutive games… The Storm have only score 17 first-goals this season, which is the fewest in the Western Conference… With only three penalties in the game totaling six minutes, it was the fewest penalty minutes this season combined between an opponent and the Storm
