- Game Summary
KEARNEY, Neb. – For the second night in a row, it was a defenseman for the Tri-City Storm scoring a big goal. | Storm defenseman Jason Binkley became just the third player on Tri-City to score a shootout goal this season, as his goal was the winner in the seventh round |
The Stampede (27-15-6, 60 pts – 3rd in Western Conference) scored with 1:46 left in the first period on Ryan Jacobson’s 19th of the season from Christian Isackson and Andrew Prochno, as Sioux Falls outshot the Storm 10-6 in the period.
Tri-City (19-19-10, 48 pts), who is tied again for sixth place in the Western Conference, watched Brian Ward score his eighth of the season on the Storm’s second power play of the game. The goal was setup perfectly by Darik Angeli, who deflected a Soren Jonzzon pass from the point to the stick of Ward, who tied the game at the 13:48 mark in the second period.
Sioux Falls would respond to take an early third period lead at the 2:28 mark in the third period on a power-play goal scored by Connor Reilly from Tomas Pastor.
Again, the Storm tied the game with 6:15 left in regulation on Cody Murphy’s 10th of the season from Nick Lappin and Cole Gunner. Gunner and Lappin worked from behind the net to setup Murphy alone in the slot for the tying goal, which forced extra-time for the second-consecutive night.
The Storm would prevail 2-1 in a seven round shootout on goals by Jonzzon and Binkley with Sioux Falls’ lone-goal coming from Austyn Young.
Diebold (10-10-3) made 38 saves on 40 shots in the shootout win, including 20 saves between the third and overtime periods. Stampede’s Stephon Williams (18-5-6) made 18 saves on 20 shots receiving the shootout loss.
Both, Tri-City and Sioux Falls finished the game 1-for-3 on the power play.
The Storm play a pair of games on the road next weekend against Omaha (Friday) and Cedar Rapids (Saturday). Tri-City went 2-3-2 on their seven-game home stand and finish the season with only four more games at home in the final 12 games of the regular season.
Notes: The Storm home record went to 13-7-6 … Tri-City is 2-10 in extra-time games against the Western Conference… Storm were down to three healthy defensemen in the game, as Rick Pinkston and Michael Montrose were out of the game, and Tri-City loss Dan Kolomatis and Bill Eiserman to injury during the course of Saturday night’s win… Kenny Brooks was moved back to defense in the third period to assist with the lack of defensemen
