KEARNEY, Neb. - The Tri-City Storm and University of Nebraska at Kearney’s Phi Gamma Delta fraternity are teaming up in February to assist UNK’s Campus Kitchen.
Campus Kitchen is this month’s recipient of the Taco John's/Spaghetti Shop "Jerseys for a Cause" program. By purchasing raffle tickets to win Storm jerseys in February, Storm fans will be helping the Campus Kitchen.
Phi Gamma Delta also is working with the Storm to encourage more UNK students to attend games and bring non-perishable food items. All fans who bring a non-perishable food item to games in February will be eligible for small "Meet and Greet" sessions with select Storm players after the Feb. 18, 19, 25 and 26 games.
Food items can be dropped off in one of the collection boxes near the main entrance, where fans will receive a chance to win a spot at the postgame "Meet and Greet."
Longtime Storm sponsor Affiliated Foods is getting in on the project by starting off the food drive with several cases of non-perishable food items. All items collected at Storm games in February will be delivered next month to the Campus Kitchen by Storm players and members of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.
"This is another example of how the Storm, sponsors and other groups can partner to help with an important community resource," said Greg Shea, Storm president.
The UNK Campus Kitchen was initiated in 2006 as a new approach to addressing rural hunger and student leadership development. The Campus Kitchen is housed in an on-campus area of the student union.
Campus Kitchen volunteers use food donations - as well as unserved and usable food from dining halls on campus - and turn that food into healthy meals. Volunteers then deliver meals to senior citizens, agencies such as shelters, after-school programs, substance abuse recovery programs and low-income families' homes.
These meals are not just dropped off. Volunteers stay to interact with, teach and learn from Campus Kitchen clients. Interaction ranges from tutoring and mentoring kids in after-school programs, to bringing nutrition education to families and single parents, to spending quality time with homebound senior citizens.
