SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Goaltender Christopher Holden did everything he could for the Tri-City Storm on Tuesday night against the Sioux City Musketeers, but received the 2-1 overtime loss making 25 saves on 27 shots. The overtime win for the Musketeers, made it a two-way tie with the Storm for sixth place, one-point in front of the Lincoln Stars in the Western Conference.
Sioux City (18-17-4, 40 pts) scored the game’s first goal in the opening period at the 10:50 mark on Matt Paape’s fourth goal of the season from Max McCormick and Ryan Carpenter.
After the scoreless second period, the Storm (16-14-8, 40 pts) tied the game on the power play 2:04 into the third period, as Nick Lappin made a great move around Sioux City defenseman David Donnellan in the left-circle scoring his second power-play goal and sixth overall of the season from Michael Montrose and Kenny Brooks.
Tri-City went 1-for-7 on the power play, while going 4-for-4 on the penalty kill. The Storm are now 2-for-9 on the power play in the last two games with both goals scored by Lappin.
In overtime, the Musketeers scored a minute into the extra-time on Caleb Herbert’s 14th goal of the season from McCormick, as the two players finished a two-on-one rush from the neutral zone.
The Storm will be back home on Friday against the Sioux Falls Stampede at the Viaero Event Center. Tri-City will play on the road twice more this weekend – Omaha (Sat) and Sioux Falls (Sun) – before opening a season long seven-game home stand.
Notes: The Storm are 0-12-4 when trailing after two periods… Lappin has scored five goals in the last 11 games… Tri-City drops to 1-1-2 this season against Sioux City… the Storm will play the Musketeers next on Feb. 18th at the Viaero Event Center
