STORM CAN’T AVENGE HOME LOSS TO ICE, LOSE 4-2

- Game Summary
INDIANAPOLIS – It was a much different game on Saturday night in Indiana compared to the last meeting in January, as the Tri-City Storm tried to contain the United States Hockey League’s top offense – the Indiana Ice. However, the Ice would prevail again after an empty-net goal from league’s scoring leader Blake Coleman late in the game, 4-2.
Indiana (23-12-3, 49 pts) opened the scoring at the 9:51 mark into the first period on the 20th goal of the season for Peter Schneider. Schneider won a left-circle faceoff and scored four-seconds later from David Johnstone and Ian Spencer.
The Storm (16-14-7, 39 pts) tied the game with 35 seconds left in the first period, as Daniil Zharkov scored his third goal of the season from Brian Ward and Matt Johnson.
The Ice scored again in the second period at the 8:29 mark on a deflected goal by Brian Ferlin from Jarrod Rabey’s right-point shot.
With less than five minutes left in the second period, Storm goalie Scott Diebold made a save on Coleman’s penalty shot at the 15:14 mark of the period. Diebold is now a perfect three-for-three in penalty shots this season.
Tri-City broke through on the power play at the 17:37 mark into the second period on Nick Lappin’s fifth goal of the season from Michael Montrose and Diebold. It was Diebold’s second assist in as many nights, which help snap a five-game goalless streak on the power play.
Indiana would take the lead back on their only power play of the game at the 18:55 mark in the second period, as Daniil Tarasov scored his 21st goal of the season from Ferlin and Coleman. Tarasov ended the game with three points and ended the season against the Storm with eight points in two games.
Diebold (9-7-3) made 30 saves on 33 shots in the loss, while Jon Gillies (9-5-1) made 20 saves on 22 shots earning the win for Indiana.
Diebold ended the weekend with a 1-1-0 record, making 63 saves on 66 shots, including his fourth shutout of the season to go with his two assists. The two assists ties a Storm record for assists by a goalie in a season with T.J. Massie (2008-09) & Carsen Chubak (2009-10).
Tri-City continues on the road trip Tuesday night playing against the Sioux City Musketeers at the Tyson Events Center. Tri-City will be back at home on February 11th against the Sioux Falls Stampede.
Notes: The Storm dropped to 15-3-5 when scoring two or more goals in a game this season… Tri-City has two power-play goals in the last 11 games, going 2-for-37… the Storm are 0-12-3 when trailing after two periods
