KEARNEY, Neb. – The Tri-City Storm will host its first Hockey Night in Kearney from 5 to 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 16 at Kearney's Viaero Event Center.

The event features a Try Hockey Camp for new youth players interested in the sport, free ice skating and photos with the team and exhibition games featuring sled hockey and youth hockey players.

Also scheduled is a skills competition among Storm players, who will go head-to-head and try to win bragging rights for having the hardest shot on the team. Players also will compete against each other in a fastest skater contest and show off other puck handling and shooting skills.

Hockey Night in Kearney replaces the Storm's annual pond hockey event, which could not be hosted this year due to unseasonably warm weather. The celebration of hockey is part of USA Hockey's highly promoted "Hockey Weekend Across America" initiative.

“Pond hockey has been a fun night for our fans, and although we couldn't host it again this year, we still wanted to do something to captivate the interest of hockey fans and sports fans in general,” said Storm President Greg Shea. “We have a great night of free entertainment planned.”

Headlining the event is a Try Hockey Camp for beginners age 4-12 who have not played organized hockey. The camp is a partnership between the Kearney Park & Recreation department and Storm Hockey and will be led by Storm players and coaches.

The camp is from 5 to 6:15 p.m. and includes stick handling and skating drills, an explanation of rules and other activities both on and off the ice. Skates and other equipment will be provided during the event.

The camp is free, but participants must pre-register by Feb. 13. Registration forms can be downloaded at
www.stormhockey.com or by calling Storm Hockey at 338.8809.

Those participating in the camp also will receive a free ticket to the Storm game Feb. 18 against Lincoln.
