KEARNEY, Neb. – Max McCormick’s power-play goal in the second period was the only goal needed for the Sioux City Musketeers to beat the Tri-City Storm on Saturday night, as the Storm were shutout for the fifth time this season.
Tri-City (18-19-9, 45 pts), who is now in a three-way tie for sixth place in the Western Conference, outshot Sioux City 11-4 in the first period. However, neither team scored in the opening period to keep it scoreless entering the intermission.
The Musketeers (20-21-5, 45 pts – Tied for 6th in Western Conference) scored five-seconds into their third power play at the 11:41 mark into the second period, as McCormick scored his 15th goal of the season and fifth against the Storm in six games the season series.
Richard Zehnal added an empty-net goal with 26-seconds left in regulation to ensure Sioux City victory for the fifth time against the Storm this season.
Storm goalie Scott Diebold (9-10-3) made 26 saves on 27 shots, while Musketeers goalie Matt Skoff (13-12-4) also made 26 saves in route to his fourth shutout of the season.
Tri-City finished the game 0-for-4 on the power play, while going 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.
The Storm will play the Omaha Lancers next Friday night at the Viaero Event Center, which is the annual “Pack-It-In-Purple” night. Tri-City is currently five games into a season-high seven game home stand and is 1-3-1 on the home stand.
Notes: The Storm home record went to 12-7-5, and are now 0-17-4 when trailing after the second period… The Storm dropped to 9-14-9 against Western Conference opponents this season… Storm were without Nick Lappin, Matt Johnson, and Rick Pinkston due to injury
