- Game Summary
KEARNEY, Neb. – After five combined goals in the first period, neither the Tri-City Storm nor Sioux Falls Stampede would score until the third period, as Sioux Falls forward Daniel Doremus scored with 41-seconds left in regulation to lift Sioux Falls past the Storm 4-3.
Tri-City (18-18-9, 45 pts – Tied for 6th in Western Conference) scored the opening goal 1:09 into the game on Soren Jonzzon’s 13th goal of the season from Kenny Brooks and Rick Pinkston. Also, it was the 12th goal scored on home ice for Jonzzon.
However, Sioux Falls (24-14-5, 53 pts – 4th in Western Conference) answered back with back-to-back goals by Sam Coatta and Andrew Prochno in a span of five-minutes and 37 seconds apart. Prochno’s goal was the lone power play goal of the game.
Exactly a minute after the Sioux Falls power-play goal, the Storm’s Cole Gunner scored his seventh goal of the season and first as a member of the Storm in his debut game. Justin Henry and Luke Sandler generated the assists on the goal that got the game tied at 2-2 with 8:19 left in the first period.
The Stampede took the lead with 3:56 left in the opening period on Ryan Reilly’s unassisted goal, which he followed up a rebound shot that hit the post and traveled back to Reilly, who scored on his second attempt.
With no goals in the second period, Storm goalie Christopher Holden made 19 saves on his way to a 44-save night.
Tri-City tied the game in the third period on a deflected shot from Daniil Zharkov, who redirected the shot from Jason Binkley and into the Sioux Falls goal. The goal was originally disallowed, however after further discussion with the linesmen the referee Todd Lacina signaled that the goal would be allowed. Zharkov would net his fifth goal of the season and second in as many games.
The game-winning goal from Doremus was setup behind the Storm goal, which was passed out front by Nolan Youngmun to Doremus, who scored his 16th of the season.
Holden (9-8-4) only faced eight shots in the final period, but saw 40 shots combined in the first and second periods. Meanwhile, Stephon Williams (18-4-5) made 34 saves on 37 shots in the win for the Stampede.
Tri-City finished the game 0-for-2 on the power play, while going 1-for-2 on the penalty kill.
