KEARNEY, Neb. – Tri-City Storm goalie Christopher Holden set a franchise record, while tying another in Friday night’s 5-4 overtime loss to the Sioux City Musketeers. Holden tied the mark of 48 saves in a game, which was set by former Storm T.J. Massie (Feb. 21, 2009) and set the record for saves in a period with 28 in the second period.
The Storm (17-16-9, 43 pts), who are now tied for seventh place in the Western Conference with Sioux City, scored on their lone power play opportunity of the game in the second period, as Soren Jonzzon scored his first of two goals on the evening to give the Storm an early 1-0 lead at the 1:07 mark into the period.
Sioux City (19-19-5, 43 pts) scored more than 12-minutes later on the first of two goals for Brad Robbins at the 13:36 mark into the second period.
Jonzzon scored his 12th of the season on a breakaway from Brad Schierhorn and Matt Johnson four-minutes later to give the Storm the lead back for the second time in the game.
With 59-seconds left in the second period, Christopher Holden made one of his franchise-record 28 saves in a period on a penalty shot by Richard Zehnal, after Zehnal was hauled down on a breakaway attempt.
The Musketeers scored back-to-back goals two-minutes apart starting at the 5:15 mark in the third period, as Max McCormick and Tommy Olczyk each tallied goals to give Sioux City a brief one-goal advantage.
However, Cody Murphy scored his ninth goal of the season, and his third in as many games with 8:12 remaining. The highlight reel goal by Murphy was followed up 90-seconds later by Brad Schierhorn’s 11th goal of the season to give the Storm the lead for the third-and-final time.
Robbins would tie the game again with his ninth of the season with 5:37 left in regulation. The two teams combined for three goals in a span of three-minutes and 35-seconds in the third period.
With 31-seconds left in overtime, Holden went to play the puck behind the net, but didn’t see Matt Paape sneaking into the Storm zone, as Paape stole the puck and scored his sixth of the season on the unattended Storm goal.
Holden (8-7-4) picked up the overtime loss seeing just the one shot in the extra-time, while goaltender Jake Hildebrand (7-9-1) made 17 saves on 21 shots in the win for the Musketeers.
The Storm went 1-for-1 on the power play, while the Sioux City was 0-for-2 in the game.
Tri-City will play the Fargo Force on Saturday night at the Viaero Event Center. The Storm are currently on a season-high seven game home stand.
