- Game Summary

KEARNEY, Neb. – The Chicago Steel entered the night on an 18-game winless streak, but it was far from easy for the Tri-City Storm, who used overtime to beat the Steel 3-2 for the second time this season.

Storm forward Brian Ward, who didn't score a goal for the first 14 games of the season, now has five goals in the last 15 games
The Storm (15-12-7, 37 pts) scored at the 8:55 mark into the first period on an unassisted goal scored by Brian Ward. Ward intercepted the clearing attempt by Chicago in the Steel zone and fired a quick shot from the high-slot for his fifth goal of the season.

The Steel (7-23-6, 20 pts), who extended their winless streak to 19 games, responded on a goal from Tim Weber with under a minute left in the second period. Jay Camper and Joel Benson picked up the assists on Weber’s third goal of the season.

In the third period, Chicago scored on a 5-on-3 power play at the 4:56 mark to take the lead on Benson’s fourth goal of the season. Cole Gunner and Sam Windle setup Benson for the slap shot from the top right-circle.

However, Chicago’s lead wouldn’t last more than four minutes, as Soren Jonzzon tied the game at 2-2 on his team-leading 10th goal of the season. Assisting on the goal was Darik Angeli and Bill Eiserman who got it up to Jonzzon who scored with 11:13 left in regulation.

In overtime, Cody Murphy sent the 4,100 plus fans home in ovation with his sixth goal of the season scoring the game-winner at the 3:14 mark in the extra-time. Nick Lappin and Michael Montrose picked up the assists, as Lappin now has three goals and three assists in the last seven games.

Storm goalie Christopher Holden (6-4-2) earned the win making 34 saves on 36 shots, while Connor Wilson (7-18-5) made 25 saves on 28 shots in the overtime loss.

The Storm are on the road for six of the next seven games starting with Team USA – U18’s on Thursday night. Tri-City will be back on home on February 11th against Sioux Falls.

Notes: It was the second largest attendance of the season at the Viaero Event Center… Storm improve their home record to 10-4-4 and are 6-0-0 when leading after the first period… Tri-City is now tied with Sioux City for sixth in the Western Conference
