- Game Summary
KEARNEY, Neb. – Down two goals less than 15 minutes into the game wasn’t stopping G Adam Wilcox and the Tri-City Storm from coming back to beat the Sioux Falls Stampede 3-2 in a shootout. Wilcox, who led the Storm to their third-consecutive win, was again a key for Tri-City with late-game heroic saves to force the game into extra-time in front of the 3,277 fans at the Viaero Event Center Saturday night.
The win places the Storm to within one point of the final playoff spot and two points out of fifth place in the Western Conference.
Sioux Falls (12-20-2, 26 pts – 8th in Western Conference) scored back-to-back goals in the first period, as both RW Ryan Keller and D Matt Van Voorhis scored their sixth goals of the season to give the Stampede a 2-0 lead 14:52 into the game.
Tri-City (14-23-0, 28 pts – 7th in Western Conference) would earn their first penalty shot of the season on the power play late in the first period at the 19:03 mark, which saw C Nick Lappin score his team-leading 19th goal of the season in his first penalty-shot goal of his USHL career. The penalty shot was awarded to the Storm, as a Stampede defenseman had his hand covering the puck in the Sioux Falls crease.
The Storm would strike just 44-seconds in the second period on LW Thomas Nykopp’s sixth goal of the season from LW Trevor Moore. Nykopp was playing in his first game back from injury after missing six-straight games for the Storm.
From there the goaltenders in the game would take over, as Wilcox and Sioux Falls G Stephon Williams would make several key saves to keep their clubs into the game. Wilcox was challenged several times in the third period and made one of the best saves of the season on Stampede’s RW Bryan Moore to preserve the Storm’s comeback chance going into extra-time.
The game would move to a shootout with Sioux Falls scoring their lone-goal in the shootout via LW Kent Sherrer, while the Storm got goals from Lappin and Moore to win their second shootout of the season. Tri-City is now 8-0 all-time against the Stampede in the shootout throughout 12 seasons in the USHL.
Wilcox (13-10-0) made 30 saves on 32 shots and was two-for-three in the shootout win for the Storm, while Williams (6-9-2) made 36 saves on 38 shots and was only one-for-three in the shootout loss for the Stampede.
Tri-City went 0-for-4 on the power play, while going a perfect 2-for-2 on the penalty kill. The Storm are now 12-for-12 on the penalty-kill during this three-game winning streak.
The Storm are on the road next weekend playing in Sioux City on Friday and Des Moines on Saturday. The Breeze 94.5 FM will air Friday night’s game, while Classic Hits 98.9 FM will air Saturday’s game with the Viaero Wireless Pre-Game Shows starting at 6:45 p.m. each night.
