STORM CAN’T SLOW BUCs IN 2ND PERIOD, LOSE 5-2
Tri-City loses first game back from winter break, snaps three-game winning streak

KEARNEY, Neb. – The Des Moines Buccaneers scored five unanswered goals to finish the game, which included a three-goal second period to beat the Tri-City Storm 5-2 on Wednesday night. The loss by the Storm snaps a three-game winning streak that the team had prior to the USHL Winter Break.
 
Tri-City (9-17-0, 18 pts – 8th in Western Conference) started off the game the right way, as LW/C Brad Schierhorn scored his fifth goal of the season from RW Michael Vecchione and LW Thomas Nykopp at the 10:48 mark in the first period.
 
Less than six minutes later, C Tim Bonner would score his eighth goal of the season and fourth in the last three games to give the Storm a 2-0 lead through the first 20 minutes. RW Tim Lappin and D Bryan Sinz each earned an assist on the Bonner goal.
 
Des Moines (11-11-1, 23 pts – 4th in Western Conference), who snapped a three-game losing streak, would score less than two minutes into the second period on LW Justin Hussar’s team-leading eighth goal of the season. Defenseman Anderson White and C Chad McDonald would score exactly 10-minutes apart beginning at the 8:50 mark to give the Buccaneers a 3-2 lead through two periods.
 
The Buccaneers would score two more goals in the third period with LW Patrick Kirtland and RW Anthony Greco each scoring a goal. Greco’s goal was into the empty-net with 1:07 left in regulation to seal the victory for Des Moines.
 
Storm G Pheonix Copley (8-11-0) made 31 saves on 35 shots in the loss for the Storm, while G Jason Kasdorf (8-9-1) finished the game with 20 saves on 22 shots earning the win for the Buccaneers.
 
Tri-City went 0-for-3 on the power play, while going a perfect 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
 
The Storm will host two more games this weekend against Sioux City on Friday and Omaha on Saturday. Both games will be on Classic Hits 98.9 FM with the Viaero Wireless Pre-Game Show’s starting at 6:45 p.m.
 
Notes:  The Storm will lose the season series to the Buccaneers, as they drop to 1-4-0 with one more game between the two clubs in Des Moines… Tri-City is now 8-8-0 when scoring the first goal this season and have now scored the first goal in seven-consecutive games… The Storm dropped to 0-10-0 when trailing after two periods this season and 0-37-4 dating back to last season… Storm RW Kenny Brooks’ career-high three-game goal streak ended Wednesday night in the loss
