| Storm defenseman Simon Denis scored his first goal of the season in the third period on the power play against the Fargo Force |
After a scoreless first period, Tri-City (14-11-6, 34 pts) scored the game-winning goal with 3:40 left in the second period on Brian Ward’s fourth of the season from Kenny Brooks and Matt Johnson. Ward, who was 13-seconds removed from the penalty box, joined a quick rush up ice with Brooks and scored of the rebound shot from the right-side of the crease.
It was Ward’s second game-winning goal of the season, both of which have been against the Force. The Storm are now 12-0-0 when leading after two periods and 8-0-1 when scoring the first goal.
In the third period, Fargo (18-13-4, 40 pts) exchanged penalties with the Storm before going down another man to give the Storm a four-on-three power play 4:44 into the final frame. The Storm would capitalize on the man-advantage, as Simon Denis scored his first goal of the season getting setup by Soren Jonzzon and Rick Pinkston.
While the Storm were down a man with under six minutes left in regulation, Diebold made an initial save on the Force’s Jimmy Mullin on a bottom right-circle shot. However, Mullin got to the rebound and had a wrap-around attempt from behind the net, which was blocked off by a diving Brooks to keep Diebold’s shutout intact.
Brooks ended the night with five blocked shots, including three on penalty kills for the Storm. Tri-City was 6-for-6 on the penalty kill and 1-for-6 on the power play.
The Storm look to win a pair this weekend against the Force, as the two teams play again on Saturday night at Scheels Arena.
Notes: Jonzzon now has his second longest point streak of the season at four games… Pinkston’s assist on the second goal was his team leading 14th … Tri-City entered the season with a 0-12-1 record against the Force, but has won three straight this season making the all-time record 3-12-1
