Tri-City’s three-goal lead proves to be enough for the seventh win

KEARNEY, Neb. – The Tri-City Storm got two multi-point games from RW Kenny Brooks and C Nick Lappin, which helped lead the Storm past the Des Moines Buccaneers 3-2. It was the first win for GM/Head Coach Josh Hauge in his USHL coaching career.
Tri-City (7-16-0, 14 pts – 8th in Western Conference) scored two back-to-back goals in the first period less than three minutes apart, as Brooks tipped in his fifth goal of the season at the 7:13 mark from D John Hrabovsky and Lappin. LW Heikki Liedes would then be setup out in front of the Des Moines goal for his seventh of the season by Lappin and Brooks at the 9:50 mark in the period.
The Storm would increase their lead to three goals after LW Brad Schierhorn would force a Des Moines turnover with check in behind the Buccaneers goal. The turnover would lead to an unassisted goal by RW Andrew Dorantes for his first goal of the season at the 1:29 mark in the second period.
Des Moines (10-9-1, 21 pts – 4th in Western Conference) would quickly respond on the power play with LW Justin Hussar tipping in a point shot by D Connor Varley 2:51 into the second period.
C Tanner Karty scored his fourth goal of the season on a neutral zone turnover that would pull the Buccaneers to within one goal. The Buccaneers would outshoot the Storm 32-18 following the third goal by the Storm early in the second period.
Storm G Pheonix Copley (6-10-0) made 34 saves on 36 shots in the win for the Storm, including 16 saves in the third period. G Jason Kasdorf (7-7-1) finished the game with 15 saves on 18 shots receiving the loss for the Buccaneers, and was pulled in favor of Christian Frey, who was perfect with 18 saves in relief.
Tri-City went 0-for-2 on the power play, while going 2-for-3 on the penalty kill.
The Storm will play the Sioux City Musketeers on Tuesday night at the Viaero Event Center. The game will on The Breeze 94.5 FM with the Viaero Wireless Pre-Game Show at 6:45 p.m.
Notes: The Storm leads the all-time series 35-22-5 and now trail the season series 1-3-0… Tri-City is now 6-7-0 when scoring the first goal this season… The Storm improved to 6-1-0 when leading after two periods and 3-4-0 in games decided by a goal… Storm LW Thomas Nykopp, D Dalton Spicer and RW Michael Vecchione all sat out of the game due to injuries… For the second night in a row, the Storm dressed two of their 1995-born affiliate list players – RW Connor Hutchins and RW Kyle Eastman
