KEARNEY, Neb. - The Tri-City Storm is going to light up the ice and play where many hockey players learned the game: on a frozen lake.
In a tribute to old-time hockey, Storm players will get back to the grass roots of pond hockey when the team hosts its second annual "Pregame on the Pond" event at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 27 at Yanney Heritage Park in Kearney.
“Last year, we had a blast. The guys really enjoyed going out on the pond and reliving some childhood memories,” said Storm Assistant Coach Eric Fink. “It was a good reminder that hockey is only a game and is supposed to be fun.”
“I know a lot of us came away feeling refreshed,” Fink added. “It’s a great night and a fun atmosphere where the kids can forget about pro scouts, college recruiting and all of the other pressures of the season.”
“Pregame on the Pond” will take place on a rink carved out of a portion of the lake at Yanney Park. The event will include skills contests, pickup hockey between Storm players and a public skate with the team.
A new event added to this year’s festivities will be a free-will offering chili feed from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Peterson Senior Activity Center, which is located on the north edge of the park.
“With such a great turnout and so many positive comments after our initial pond hockey event, we decided to bring it back,” said Todd Gottula, Storm Vice President. “This is another great way for our players and staff to interact with fans, generate spirit and further community interest in Storm hockey.”
The Thursday event leads up to the Storm’s Jan. 29 home “white out” game against Chicago, where the first 500 fans will get free t-shirts and all fans attending are encouraged to wear white.
