Tri-City outshoots Sioux Falls 40-38, Lappin extends point streak to five games

SIOUX FALLS, SD – In the first meeting of the season, the Tri-City Storm and Sioux Falls Stampede combined for five goals on 78 shots, as the Storm fell on the shorthanded side of things losing 3-2.
Sioux Falls (4-4-1, 9 pts – 4th in Western Conference) scored the opening goal 4:50 into the first period on LW Eric Brenk’s first goal of the season.
Tri-City (3-7-0, 6 pts – 7th in Western Conference) would respond on their first power play opportunity of the night at the 11:19 mark in the first period, as C Adam Chalpik scored his third goal of the season from C Nick Lappin and RW Kenny Brooks. The assist for Lappin extended his point streak to five games with five goals and three assists in that span.
The Stampede would regain the lead less than four minutes later on a deflected shot by C Todd Skirving, who scored his fifth goal of the season.
In the second period, the Storm would strike again on the power play on RW Michael Vecchione’s third goal of the season from LW Brad Schierhorn and LW Thomas Nykopp.
However, the Stampede would take the lead for good less than 10 minutes following the Storm’s second power play goal, as LW Dan Carlson’s first goal of the season would stand as the game winner.
Goalie Pheonix Copley (3-6-0), who made 16 saves on 16 shots in the third period, ended the game with 35 saves on 38 shots in the loss for the Storm. Stampede G Charlie Lindgren (1-1-0) finished the game with 38 saves on 40 shots earning his first win of the season.
Tri-City went 2-for-4 on the power play, while going 3-for-3 on the penalty kill. The Storm are now 7-for-33 (21.2-percent) on the power play since scoring their first power play goal of the season.
The Storm will be back on the road next Friday and Saturday in Sioux City and Sioux Falls for back-to-back games. The Viaero Wireless Pre-Game Show will start at 6:45 p.m on The Breeze 94.5 FM on both nights.
