Tri-City Storm RW Michael Vecchione serves customers Tuesday night at the annual Skaters As Waiters event in Kearney. Storm players received more than $800 in tips, with all money be donated to Kearney Tackles Cancer.
KEARNEY, Neb. – Tri-City Storm players joined wait staff at Skeeter Barnes Restaurant in Kearney Tuesday and raised $800 during the hockey team’s annual Skaters As Waiters event.

The hockey players worked in the prep kitchen, took orders and cleared tables for three hours, with all tips during that time being donated to Kearney Tackles Cancer.

Kearney Tackles Cancer is spearheaded by Kearney High School, Kearney Catholic, the University of Nebraska at Kearney and Good Samaritan Cancer Center. In addition to promoting cancer awareness, Kearney Tackles Cancer raises funds that are used locally to help area cancer patients with expenses not covered by insurance.

“We appreciate the staff at Skeeter Barnes, their commitment to the event and everything they do to help make it a success,” said Greg Shea, Storm team president. “We also owe a thank you to our many fans who dined out and donated to a great cause.”

Storm hockey raises funds each season for various community organizations as part of the team’s outreach efforts, and Kearney Tackles Cancer is one of its key beneficiaries this season. The team also is raffling player jerseys at each home game this season and donating all proceeds to Kearney Tackles Cancer.

Players participating in Tuesday’s Skaters As Waiters event included: Drew Dorantes, Trevor Moore, Heikki Liedes, Thomas Nykopp, Brad Schierhorn, Dylan Maller, Sean Murphy and Michael Vecchione.

The Storm are home Friday night to host the Omaha Lancers for the first time this season. The Breeze 94.5 FM will air the game Friday night from the Viaero Event Center.
