SIOUX FALLS, SD – Despite outshooting the Sioux Falls Stampede 35-32, the Tri-City Storm loss their third-straight game on the road Wednesday night 3-1. Storm goalie Scott Diebold made 29 saves on 31 shots in the loss, as the Stampede added an empty-net goal with 10-seconds left in regulation to seal the victory.
After a scoreless first period, the Stampede (14-10-4, 32 pts) opened the scoring at the 10:52 mark in the second period on Zack Kamrass’ first goal of the season from Daniel Doremus and Austyn Young. Kamrass’ right-point shot bounced off traffic in front of goalie Scott Diebold and ended up in the back of the Storm goal.
Nolan Youngmun pushed the lead to two goals at the 6:21 mark into the third period on a rebound shot in front of Diebold for his sixth of the season.
Less than two-minutes later, the Storm (12-9-6, 30 pts) scored their only goal of the game on Matt Johnson’s ninth goal of the season. Jason Binkley fired a shot from the right-point, which popped out to Johnson to cut the Sioux Falls lead in half.
However, with the net empty for the Storm, Brent Darnell scored at the 19:50 mark in the third period to propel the Stampede into sole possession of fifth place in the Western Conference, which they entered the night tied with Des Moines and Tri-City.
Stampede goalie Stephon Williams earned the win making 34 saves on 35 shots.
The Storm look to get back in the win column at the Viaero Event Center on Friday night against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders and host the Indiana Ice on Saturday night.
Notes: The Storm are 0-9-3 when trailing to start the third period… Tri-City has only scored the opening goal eight times in 27 games this season… Tri-City is 6-7-6 against the Western Conference and 6-2-0 against the Eastern Conference this season
