ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Tri-City Storm snapped an eight-game losing streak in style on Saturday night, as 10 different players registered a point in the 4-1 win against Team USA – U18. Storm G Pheonix Copley made 24 saves in the win in The Ice Cube arena.
Tri-City (4-11-0, 8 pts – 8th in Western Conference) opened the scoring 9:14 into the first period on the fourth goal of the season for LW Thomas Nykopp that was assisted by D Greg Johnson. It was Johnson’s first-career USHL point in 35 games played in two seasons.
Team USA (3-7-1, 7 pts – 8th in Eastern Conference) would tie the game 42 seconds later on RW Frankie Vatrano’s first goal of the season in the USHL.
In the second period, the Storm would get three goals from three players, who each scored their third goal of the season. LW Brad Schierhorn would lead off the scoring 4:03 into the second period, as his goal would end as the game-winning goal. LW Trevor Moore and D J.D. Peterson each registered an assist on the Schierhorn goal.
At the 7:21 mark in the second period, RW Tim Lappin would win a right-circle faceoff to C Tim Bonner in the slot, who slammed in the goal to increase the lead to two goals.
Less than 85 seconds later, the Storm would score the games only power-play goal, as RW Kenny Brooks scored his second power-play goal (third overall) of the season from C Soren Jonzzon and D Tyler Amburgey. The Storm’s fourth goal chased USA G Jared Rutledge out of the game in favor of G Collin Olson.
The Storm would shutdown Team USA’s attack in the third period, allowing only four shots on goal.
Copley (4-9-0) finished the game with 24 saves on 25 shots in the win for the Storm, as he faced 16 shots in the first period and only nine in the remaining 40 minutes. U18 G Jared Rutledge (0-1-0) finished the game with 11 saves on 15 shots earning the loss for Team USA, while Collin Olson made seven saves in relief of Rutledge.
Tri-City went 1-for-6 on the power play, while going 6-for-6 on the penalty kill. The Storm were a perfect 13-for-13 on the penalty kill this weekend.
The Storm will travel to Lincoln on Wednesday night to play the Stars at the Ice Box. The Viaero Wireless Pre-Game Show will start at 6:45 p.m. on Classic Hits 98.9 FM.
Notes: The Storm are now 3-5-2 all-time against the USNTDP…The Storm’s leading scorer C Nick Lappin was out for the third consecutive game of the lineup due to an injury from last weekend’s games… Copley ended the weekend making 54 saves on 56 shots… It was the first-ever win for the Storm in the Ice Cube in Ann Arbor
