Tri-City drops second game in a row on the road, lose 3-1 to Buccaneers

URBANDALE, Iowa – Trent Samuels-Thomas’ two goals led the Des Moines Buccaneers past the Tri-City Storm 3-1 on Saturday night at Buccaneer Arena.
Des Moines (1-1-1, 3 pts – Tied for 3rd in Western Conference) scored the opening goal on their first power play of the game, as Samuels-Thomas scored at the 6:53 mark in the first period from Ray Pigozzi and Connor Schmidt.
Storm goalie Pheonix Copley made 15 saves on 16 shots in the first period for the Storm.
Tri-City (1-2-0, 2 pts – Tied for 4th in Western Conference) tied the game on Thomas Nykopp’s first goal of the season on a rebound shot at the 4:45 mark in the second period. RW Michael Vecchione picked up his first assist of the season on the goal.
With 9:15 left in the third period, Samuels-Thomas would score the game-winner with his second goal of the game and season, as Pigozzi assisted again on the goal.
Center Cal Decowski would add another Buccaneers goal less than two minutes later with Ethan Prow and Patrick Kirtland picking up the assists.
Copley made 28 saves on 31 shots in the loss, while Jason Kasdorf finished the game with 20 saves on 21 shots earning the first win of the season for Des Moines.
Tri-City went 0-for-4 on the power play, while going 2-for-3 on the penalty kill.
The Storm return home next Saturday to host the Chicago Steel for the “Pink in the Rink Night” in support of breast cancer awareness. Classic Hits 98.9 FM will air the game Saturday night from the Viaero Event Center.
Notes: The Storm are now 34-20-5 against the Buccaneers in all-time meetings… Tri-City is now 11-for-13 on the penalty kill and 0-for-16 on the power play through three games this season… Vecchione has two points (G, A) in the last two games on the road… It was Storm defenseman J.D. Peterson’s first game back against his former club in Des Moines
