KEARNEY, Neb. – For the second consecutive home game, the Tri-City Storm shutout their opponent, as the Storm beat the Chicago Steel 2-0 in front of the largest crowd in the month of October in five seasons.
The game was played in front of 3,275, which was the largest crowd in the month of October since Oct. 13, 2006 (attendance – 3,280). Also, it was the third largest crowd in the month of October in the last six seasons.
After a scoreless first two periods with the Storm outshooting the Steel 25-9, Tri-City (2-2-0, 4 pts – 5th in Western Conference) scored the opening goal on C Nick Lappin’s second goal of the season at the 1:48 mark in the third period. Lappin’s goal was assisted by LW Thomas Nykopp and RW Davey Middleton.
Lappin would score again with 2:12 left in regulation on an unassisted goal, as the Steel cleared the puck out of the crease to Lappin in the slot, who wristed the puck into the net for his second multi-goal game in his USHL career.
Chicago (2-3-0, 4 pts – 6th in Western Conference) matched their total shots on goal through 40 minutes with nine shots in the third period, but Storm goalie Pheonix Copley continued his perfection at the Viaero Event Center.
Copley (2-2-0) finished the game with 18 saves in his second shutout victory of the season, while Mathias Dahlstrom (2-3-0) finished the game with 39 saves on 41 shots in the loss for Chicago.
Tri-City went 0-for-4 on the power play, while going 4-for-4 on the penalty kill. The Storm penalty kill remains perfect on home ice at 10-for-10.
The Storm play next Friday at home against the Indiana Ice. The Breeze 94.5 FM will air the game Friday night from the Viaero Event Center.
Notes: The game was played on pink ice, as it was the franchise’s first-ever “Pink in the Rink” night… The Storm are now 25-16-5 against the Steel in all-time meetings… Storm RW Kenny Brooks fought D Ryan Trenz in the third period and became the first Storm player with a major penalty this season… Tri-City is now 15-for-17 on the penalty kill and 0-for-20 on the power play through four games this season… Lappin became the first Storm player with a multi-goal game this season, while the second player with a multi-point game (Tyler Amburgey – 10/7 @ Dubuque, 2 A)… The Storm are now 2-0-0 at the Viaero Event Center this season
