Kearney, Neb. – Tri-City Storm defenseman Philip Alftberg was named CCM Defenseman of the Week, the USHL announced Monday. Alftberg leads league defenseman with seven points and is tied for second among blueliners with five assists.
In two weekend wins, the 19-year-old scored two goals and four points. Friday against Cedar Rapids, Alftberg earned two assists. Next, the native of Märsta, Sweden buried his first two USHL goals in a span of 1:48 Saturday against the Lincoln Stars to complete second straight multi-point game.
The goals came in different ways; Alftberg one-timed a power-play goal from the point more than seven minutes into the first and stashed a loose puck in at the right post for his second.
The first-year player has three multi-point games, tied for best on the club with Storm points leader Alex Limoges. The right-handed shot is also tied for most power-play points by a defenseman, with three.
Alftberg has been on the ice for the most goals (15) of any Storm player, roughly 54% of Tri-City’s 28 tallies.
Standing 5-foot-8 and 178 pounds, Alftberg comes to the Storm from Brynäs IF J20, a U20 junior team based in Sweden. Last season, Alftberg scored three goals and was second among club defenseman with 18 assists. He is one of three active Tri-City players to compete in the Swedish Jr. Leagues (Christoffer Karlsen, Linus Weissbach).
In 2014-15, Alftberg won the U18 National Championship with Brynäs. He played for the club from 2013-16.
The Storm selected Alftberg in the ninth round, 146th overall, in Phase II of the 2016 USHL Draft.
Tri-City is next in action on Friday, October 28 at Fargo. After matching the Force for a pair of weekend games, the Storm returns home on Friday, November 4 for Social Media Night, presented by the Nebraska Lottery. Friday is a $5 Kids Friday; all kids 12 and under receive a voucher for a free soft taco and soft drink at Kearney Taco Bell.
