Storm sweep Des Moines, advance to Western Conference Final

Urbandale, IA – The Tri-City Storm downed the Des Moines Buccaneers by a final score of 5-1 Tuesday night at Buccaneer Arena to complete a series sweep and advance to the Western Conference Final. In the game, Tri-City got goals from Joe Berg, Brendan Furry, Benji Eckerle, Shane Pinto, and Connor McMenamin. Isaiah Saville stopped 37 of 38 shots to record the win in goal. The Storm now advance to the Western Conference Final to face either the Sioux Falls Stampede or the Waterloo Black Hawks. The Stampede lead the Black Hawks 2-1 in the best of five Western Conference Semifinal. Western Conference Final dates will be announced at a later date.

 

Joe Berg scored with under one minute to play in the 1st period to give Tri-City a 1-0 lead. Berg’s goal, scored at 19:38 of the 1st period, was his 1st goal of the postseason. Shane Pinto recorded the lone assist on the goal. Tri-City outshot Des Moines 13-12 and carried a one goal lead into the 2nd period. Brendan Furry netted his 4th goal of the postseason just over two minutes into the 2nd period to give Tri-City a 2-0 lead in the game. Furry’s goal was scored on the power play and was assisted by Shane Pinto and Zac Jones. At 18:01 of the period, Des Moines’ Matt Brown scored his 4th goal of the playoffs to cut the Storm’s lead in half. The goal was scored on the power play and was assisted by TJ Walsh and Reed Lebster. Each team had 11 shots on goal in the 2nd period.

 

Tri-City’s Benji Eckerle scored at 2:24 of the 3rd period to give Tri-City it’s second two goal lead of the game. Shane Pinto added a goal at 12:31 of the 3rd period to increase the Storm’s lead to 4-1. Pinto’s 3rd goal of the playoffs was assisted by Filip Forsmark and Zac Jones. Connor McMenamin scored an empty net goal at 18:21 of the 3rd period to give Tri-City a 5-1 victory. McMenamin’s 2nd goal of the postseason was assisted by Chase McLane and Filip Forsmark. Isaiah Saville notched his 3rd consecutive win in the Clark Cup Playoffs, stopping 37 of 38 shots in net.

 

The Storm will host either Sioux Falls or Waterloo at the Viaero Center for Game #1 & Game #2 of the 2019 Western Conference Final. Sioux Falls leads Waterloo 2-1 in the best of five Western Conference Semifinal series following a 6-2 defeat of the Waterloo Black Hawks Tuesday night. Tri-City could learn its opponent for the Western Conference Final as soon as Wednesday night.
