Recap: Storm clinch playoff spot in road win over Sioux Falls

Sioux Falls, SD – The Tri-City Storm clinched a spot in the 2019 Clark Cup Playoffs tonight in Sioux Falls, SD with a 3-1 defeat of the Sioux Falls Stampede. Ronnie Attard scored the game winning goal in the 3rd period, and Filip Forsmark netted two goals in the win. Storm goaltender Jake Barczewski made 21 saves on 22 shots to record the win in net. Tri-City returns home to the Viaero Center on Friday to begin a five game homestand.

 

Filip Forsmark opened the scoring with under seven minutes to play in the 1st period. The goal from Forsmark was his 10th goal of the season and gave the Storm its first lead of the weekend. Forsmark’s goal was assisted by Colton Kalezic and Joe Molenaar. Tri-City entered the 3rd period with a 1-0 lead after neither team was able to score in the 2nd period.

 

Ronnie Attard scored the Storm’s 2nd goal of the game just over seven minutes into the 3rd period. The goal was assisted by Colby Ambrosio and Zac Jones and gave Tri-City a 2-0 lead. With three minutes left to play in the game, Sioux Falls deflected a puck past Jake Barczewski to cut the lead in half. The Stampede goal was scored by Sam Stevens at the 17:00 mark of the 3rd period. Sioux Falls lifted netminder Alec Calvaruso for an extra attacker with under two minutes to play in a last attempt to tie the game. Filip Forsmark capitalized on a turnover at center ice to put the game away with an empty net goal. Forsmark’s empty net goal was scored with 23 seconds left in the game and was his 11th of the year.

 

Jake Barczewski was named the 1st Star of the Game following a 21 save on 22 shot performance in goal. Tri-City outshot Sioux Falls 27-22 and improved to 29-0-0-0 when leading after the 2nd period this season. After clinching a playoff spot, Tri-City now returns home for two game weekend against Sioux City. In the Musketeers and Storm’s only previous meeting of the season, Tri-City set a team record in a 16 round shootout victory.
