Kearney, NE– The Tri-City Storm erased an early deficit and defeated in state rival Lincoln 5-3 Thursday night at the Viaero Center. Joe Molenaar and Connor McMenamin each netted two goals in the game, Joe Berg scored one goal, and Jake Barczewski made 40 saves in net in the win. The Storm travel to Fargo, ND for a two game road series against the Fargo Force this weekend.
Max Ellis scored half a minute into the game to give the Stars a 1-0 lead. At the 12:17 mark of the 1st period, Tri-City’s Connor McMenamin provided an answer on the power play with a goal to bring the game to 1-1. The goal was McMenamin’s 6th of the season, and was assisted by Filip Forsmark and Colby Ambrosio. The Stars took another lead in the game on Max Ellis’ 2nd goal of the night less than a minute after McMenamin’s game tying goal. Lincoln outshot Tri-City 15-13 in the 1st period and carried a 2-1 lead into the 2nd period.
The Storm tied the game for a 2nd time as Joe Berg netted his 2nd goal of the season at 8:38 of the 2nd period. Berg’s goal was assisted by Ian Murphy, and Joe Molenaar. In a game that saw three different players scored multiple goals, Joe Molenaar scored his 1st of the night minutes later to give the Storm its first lead of the night. Molenaar’s 6th goal of the season was netted at the 11:41 mark of the 2nd period and was assisted by Benji Eckerle, and Asa Kinnear. Lincoln outshot Tri-City 12-10 in the 2nd period, but the Storm took a one goal lead into the 3rd period.
Joe Molenaar scored his 2nd goal of the game and 7th goal of the season less than four minutes into the 3rd period to boost the Storm lead to two goals. The goal was scored at 3:22 of the 3rd period and was unassisted. Connor McMenamin scored his 2nd goal of the game and 7th goal of the season at the 12:34 mark of the period to give Tri-City a 5-2 lead. McMenamin’s goal was assisted by Colby Ambrosio and Ruben Rafkin. Lincoln netted the game’s final goal with less than 30 seconds to play to bring the deficit back to two goals. Tri-City picked up its 18th win of the season in a 5-3 home defeat of in state rival Lincoln.
Jake Barczewski stopped a season high 40 shots and improved to 7-3 on the year. Barczewski was named the games 3rd Star for his 40 save on 43 shot performance in goal. Connor McMenamin’s two goal night earned him the 2nd Star of the game. Joe Molenaar with two goals and one assist in the game was awarded the 1st Star of the game. Tri-City clinched the season series against the Stars in the victory. The Storm improved to 5-1 on the year against Lincoln with three games left in the 2018-2019 regular season series. Tri-City improved its record to 18-5-1-0 in the win.
