Kearney, NE. – The Tri-City Storm has acquired defenseman Jacob Willets from the Omaha Lancers, in exchange for the Storm’s 11th Round pick in the 2019 USHL Phase II Draft.

Jacob Willets, 18, of Monroe, MI was drafted 86th Overall in the 2018 USHL Phase II Draft by the Omaha Lancers. During the 2017-2018 season, Willets skated in 55 games with the Fairbanks Ice Dogs of the NAHL. He netted 6 goals and recorded 7 assists last season during his rookie campaign. The Ice Dogs finished the season with the best record in the NAHL, but were eliminated in the Robertson Cup Semifinals by the Minot Minotauros. Prior to joining Fairbanks, Willets skated for the Detroit Belle Tire U18 program and St. Mary Catholic Central High School in Monroe, Michigan. He set multiple school records in his career with the SMCC Falcons, and left the program as its all-time leading scorer. Willets netted 98 goals, and registered 61 assists in 80 career games. His 159 career points are the most in the school’s history. During the 2015-2016 season, Willets led the state in scoring with 61 goals.

“With the guys that we lost last year, getting quality defenseman in our Phase I and Phase II draft was of the utmost importance. Jake was someone who was on our radar at the draft, he’s a quality two way defenseman, who can move the puck, and get involved offensively. Omaha felt that they had a surplus of defenseman, and we were able to make a fair trade. Jake played for one of the top programs in the NAHL, so we know that he developed good habits and was coached well there” - GM/Head Coach Anthony Noreen
