2018 USHL Draft Preview

Kearney NE – The Tri-City Storm will participate in the 2018 USHL Phase I and Phase II draft on Monday and Tuesday to acquire new players and build for the future. Tri-City ended the 2017-2018 season last month in a first round playoff exit against Fargo. Earlier this season, the Storm signed Ruben Rafkin and Colby Ambrosio through the USHL’s tender process and as a result must forfeit its 1st Round and 2nd Round pick in Tuesday’s Phase I draft.

Phase I Draft: Monday, 6:00pm

Phase II Draft: Tuesday, 10:00am


The 2018 USHL draft will be conducted in two parts next week over two days. The Phase I draft will begin on Monday at 6:00pm and will be open to players with a 2002 birth year. The Phase I draft is 10 rounds and will conclude on Monday night. The Phase II draft will begin Tuesday at 10:00am and will allow teams to draft 1998, 1999, 2001, 2001, & 2002 birth year players with the goal of building a 45 player roster.


Last year in the Phase I draft, Tri-City selected defenseman Mike Koster 2nd overall in the 1st round. Along with skating for Chaska High School in Chaska, MN this season, Koster scored two goals and added eight assists in twenty one games with the Storm.


In the first round of the 2017 Phase II draft, Tri-City selected forward Tyler Ward and goaltender Filip Larsson in back to back picks. Ward finished the 2017-2018 season with ten goals, good for 4th most on the team. He also recorded thirteen assists and finished the season with twenty three points. Larsson appeared in thirty games with Tri-City and finished with a record of 18-10 in net. He also set a USHL record with a .941 save percentage on the season. Larsson posted the 2nd best GAA in the history of the USHL at 1.65 and was twice named the USHL Goaltender of the Week during the 2017-2017 season. Filip Larsson was named the USHL’s Goaltender of the Year for the 2017-2018 season and became the first player in Tri-City Storm history to win Goaltender of the Year honors.
