Lincoln is one of five Western Conference to teams to clinch a playoff spot this season, leaving Tri-City and Sioux City to battle for the final playoff spot in the conference.

Tri-City (29-23-2-2) enters tonight’s game following a midweek loss to the Omaha Lancers on Wednesday night at the Viaero Center. The Lancers shutout Tri-City for the third time this season, giving the Storm its 5th consecutive loss. Tri-City is a perfect 5-0 against the rival Stars this season and has already locked up a win in the season series. With four games left in the regular season, Tri-City will see Lincoln a total of three times as the push for the playoffs continues. Tonight’s game will mark the first game between the two rivals in the 2018 calendar year. Although Tri-City and Lincoln have played five regular season games so far this season, the two haven’t met since December 28th. The Storm defeated the Stars 3-2 at the Icebox in Lincoln that night behind goals from Ronnie Attard, Tyler Ward, and Tyler Madden. Madden scored the game winning goal with 31 seconds left in regulation time at 19:29 of the 3rd period to give the Storm the win. Jake Barczewski made 32 saves on 34 shots to record the victory in goal for the Storm. Tri-City’s magic playoff clinching number remains at just three points with four games left. If the Storm pick up three points in the standings during the season’s remaining regular season games, it will lock up a spot in the post season tournament. It is possible for Tri-City to not win any additional games and still clinch a playoff berth. The Sioux City Musketeers continue to hold on to the 7th spot in the Western Conference standings and are the only team who could knock the Storm out of a playoff spot. Each time Sioux City loses a game in regulation, Tri-City’s magic playoff clinching number of three will decrease by two points. With two wins over Lincoln this weekend, Tri-City will clinch a playoff berth, regardless of Sioux City’s record. The moment could come as soon as tonight, as Tri-City hosts the Lincoln Stars at the Viaero Center and Sioux City hosts the Cedar Rapids Roughriders at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, IA. A Storm win over Lincoln and a Sioux City loss tonight would put the Storm in the playoffs for the first time since the 2015-2016 season, in which Tri-City capped off a playoff run with its first Clark Cup Championship in team history.
Lincoln (32-22-1-1) enters tonight’s matchup in search of its first win over Tri-City in this year’s regular season schedule. The Stars have dropped all five previous games to the Storm and currently occupy 5th place in the Western Conference standings. Lincoln has already clinched a playoff spot and is still battling for home ice advantage in the opening round. The Stars trail 4th place Sioux Falls by six points and 3rd place Fargo by seven. The Stars are one of a handful of USHL teams to win eight of its last ten games and will be looking to carry that momentum into tonight’s game. Lincoln, Fargo, and Youngstown have all notched eight victories during their last ten games, with Lincoln winning thirteen of its last fifteen. From February 23rd to March 17th, the Stars compiled eleven consecutive wins before eventually falling to Youngstown by a final score of 3-0 on March 23rd. Tomas Vomacka has appeared in 42 games with Lincoln this season and leads the Stars in almost every goaltending statistical category. Vomacka is 23-18-0-0 with three shutouts on the year and a GAA of 2.81. Scoring leaders for Lincoln entering tonight’s battle against Tri-City include Dominick Mersch and Casey Dornbach. Dornbach leads the Stars with 53 points and 33 assists on the season. Mersch is the team’s goals leader with 21 on the year. Lincoln will host Tri-City for the final time tomorrow night at the Icebox in Lincoln.
Tonight’s promotions at the Viaero Center include discounted Kids Ticket pricing presented by Funtastic. $5 Kids Ticket pricing is available for tonight’s game. In addition to the discounted ticket pricing, the first 500 kids at tonight’s game will receive a free cowbell. Casino Night presented by Midway is the game night promotion with special Casino themed card games set up around the concourse. Thirty tables on the concourse will provide fans the opportunity to play various card games for a chance to win great prizes from local sponsors! All games will be played with fake money and are free to play.
Along with the promotional events at tonight’s game, Tri-City and Lincoln will also battle for the 1st annual Sammy’s Cup this weekend. The Sammy’s Cup presented by Sammy’s Superheroes Foundation and First National Bank is a two game series between the Storm and the Stars. Tri-City and Lincoln play a total of eight regular season games this season, but only the two games in this weekend’s series will decide the Sammy’s Cup. Each team has a total donation goal of $1,500 and it will serve as the tiebreaker in the Sammy’s Cup series should each team win one game.
