Kearney, NE. – The Tri-City Storm dropped the first game of the weekend to Team USA by a final of 8-2 Saturday night at the Viaero Center. Noah Weber and Blake Evennou scored the Storm’s goals in the loss. Team USA’s Jack Hughes scored 4 goals in the win. Both teams meet again tomorrow afternoon for the final game of the season series.
Tri-City and Team USA were scoreless for much of the 1st period on Saturday night. Team USA netted two goals in the final 5 minutes of the opening period and skated away with a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes. Jack Hughes scored his 1st of the night and 11th of the season at 15:42 of the 1st period to give Team USA a 1-0 lead. Jake Wise netted his 4th of the season with 29 seconds left in the opening period to increase the Team USA lead to two goals.
Jake Hughes scored his 2nd of the game and 12th of the season less than a minute into the 2nd period to give Team USA a 3-0 lead. Jonathan Gruden scored at the 4:28 mark of the 2nd period and increased the Team USA lead to four goals. It was his 10th goal of the season and less than 5 minutes into the 2nd period Team USA lead 4-0. Trevor Janicke scored his 4th of the season at the period’s 9:04 mark to push the Team USA lead to five goals. Jack Hughes completed his hat trick minutes later and gave Team USA a 6-0 lead just past the midway point of the 2nd period. Hughes’ goal was his 13th of the season. Tri-City’s Noah Weber put the Storm on the board at the 14:37 mark of the 2nd period. Weber’s goal was his 2nd of the season and was assisted by Blake Evennou. Team USA added another goal shortly after to stretch the lead to 7-1. Jack Hughes scored his 4th goal of the game to give Team USA a six goal advantage with under 5 minutes to play in the 2nd period. Joel Farabee scored the period’s final goal at the 18:59 mark and Team USA carried an 8-1 lead into the 3rd period.
The Storm scored the 3rd periods only goal less than 2 minutes in to the period. Blake Evennou scored his 3rd goal of the season at the 1:31 mark of the 3rd period. Chase McLane picked up the lone assist on the Evennou goal. The goal brought the Team USA lead back to six goals and the game would finish at a final score of 8-2 in favor of Team USA.
Shots on goal favored Team USA 33-22. Tri-City’s Connor Hopkins recorded 25 saves on 33 shots and took the loss in goal for Tri-City. Team USA’s Drew DeRidder picked up the win in goal, stopping 20 of 22 Storm shots.
The Storm return to action tomorrow afternoon at the Viaero Center in another matchup with Team USA. The broadcast will begin at 2:45pm on HockeyTV and the Breeze 94.5FM. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:05pm.
