Kearney, NE – The Tri-City Storm look to complete a season series sweep against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders tonight at the Viaero Center in the team’s annual “Pack It In Purple” event. The Storm and the RoughRiders finish the cross conference series tonight after Tri-City’s 1-0 shutout of the RoughRiders in Cedar Rapids, IA last Friday night. The Storm have won three games in a row, and can record the 2nd longest winning streak of the season with a win tonight. Tri-City won six consecutive games from October 20th to November 4th, 2017.

In the last game between the Storm and the RoughRiders, Filip Forsmark scored the game’s only goal at the 14:22 mark of the 2nd period. The goal was Forsmark’s 6th of the season and was assisted by Tyler Ward and Ronnie Attard. Goalie Filip Larsson stopped all 32 RoughRiders shots to secure the victory for Tri-City.
Tonight’s game is the first of a three game weekend for the Storm. The Des Moines Buccaneers will host the Storm Saturday night in Urbandale, IA following the Storm’s 4-2 defeat of the Bucs last Saturday night. Tri-City will travel to Sioux City, IA on Sunday afternoon for a matchup against the Sioux City Musketeers. Tri-City is a combined 8-1-1 this season against the three opponents on this weekend’s schedule.
Tri-City enters tonight’s matchup with Cedar Rapids on a three game winning streak. The Storm were last in action on Saturday night in Urbandale, IA and downed the Des Moines Buccaneers by a final score of 4-2. Ronnie Attard, Keaton Pehrson, Tyler Madden, and Connor McMenamin scored the Storm’s goals and Jake Barczewski stopped 23 of 24 Des Moines shots in the victory.
Cedar Rapids dropped both games last weekend and was shutout in both losses. Cedar Rapids lost 1-0 to Tri-City on Friday and was defeated 3-0 by Fargo on Saturday. The RoughRiders have scored 1 goal or less in 5 of their last 7 games entering tonight’s matchup against the Storm. Cedar Rapids is 3-6-1-0 in its last 10 games and currently sits in 8th place in the Eastern Conference. The RoughRiders are looking to climb into a playoff position in the final few weeks of the season, and currently trail 6th place Chicago by 6 points.
The Storm enters tonight’s game as the 5th place team in the Western Conference standings. Tri-City is just two games back of 2nd place Waterloo with two games in hand on the Black Hawks. League leading Omaha is 9 points clear of Tri-City for 1st place with two head to head matchups remaining with the Storm.
Tyler Madden and Bryan Yoon are tied with team lead in points with 25 on the season for the Storm. 24 of Yoon’s 25 points have been assists and he continues to lead all Tri-City skaters in assists. Madden is the team’s leader in goals with 12 on the season. Madden also leads the team with 4 game winning goals scored this season, including the game winning goal in the Storm’s 4-2 win against Des Moines on Saturday night. Jake Barczewski picked up another win on the season in goal for Tri-City in the Storm’s last game and improved to 8-5-1-1 in the win. Barczewski has a 2.35 Goals Against Average and a .913 Save Percentage.
The RoughRiders offense is ranked 13th in the USHL despite having five players in the double digits in goal scoring this season. Marek Valach (15), Jordan Timmons (14), Graham Slaggert (12), Marc McLaughlin (10), and Matthew Thomson (10) have led the Cedar Rapids offense this season. Valach leads the RoughRiders with 15 goals and 33 points on the season. Nathan Smith is the team’s assist’s leader, adding 20 assists to the Cedar Rapids offense during the 2017-2018 season. Blake Pietila and Jiri Patera have each played 24 games in net this season for the RoughRiders. Pietila took the loss in goal vs. Tri-City on last Friday night, despite stopping 19 of 20 Storm shots. Pietila’s record now stands at 9-9-2-1 with a 3.08 Goals Against Average and a .902 Save Percentage. Patera is 7-12-4-0 in goal for Cedar Rapids this season with a 3.59 GAA, and .892 Save Percentage.
“Pack it In Purple” returns to the Viaero Center in Kearney tonight with the Storm playing their first home game in the month of March. The first 1,500 fans attending tonight’s game will received a free t shirt thanks to Sayler Screen-printing. Tonight is also a $5 Kids Friday with special kid’s ticket pricing presented by Funtastic. Team Concepts sponsors tonight’s “Family Night’ promotion, and there will be a post-game skate following tonight’s game. The Storm will wear specialty jerseys against the RoughRiders tonight. A live auction for the game worn jerseys will follow the game, with proceeds of the auction going to the United Way of Kearney.
