Preview: Storm host 1st place Omaha on Valentine's Day

Kearney, NE – The Tri-City Storm host rival and 1st place Omaha tonight on Valentine’s Day at the Viaero Center. Tri-City is in the midst of a four game winless streak, while Omaha enters tonight’s matchup red hot. The Lancers have won 8 of the last 9 games, with the only loss during that stretch coming at home to Tri-City on January 28th. The Storm’s most recent win was also during the same game, a 3-2 shootout win over rival Omaha. The Storm and the Lancers have each won 3 of the first 6 games in the regular season series.

Tri-City (23-13-1-1) enters tonight’s game as the 6th place team in the USHL league standings. The Storm are 5th in the Western Conference and currently 7 points behind league leading Omaha. Tri-City is 12-7-1-0 on home ice this season and will attempt to snap a four game winless streak tonight. Tri-City was named the #1 team in the USA Hockey Magazine/USHL Power Rankings for the month of January, but the Storm have now played four games in the month of February without a win. The Storm have had found success against the Lancers this season, winning three games in the season series. Tonight’s game will be the 7th matchup between the two teams this season in a nine game season series. Tri-City plays more games against Omaha this season than any other USHL team. The Storm have only allowed 80 goals on the season and continue to lead the USHL in that statistical category. Tri-City is 4-5-1-0 over the last ten games and is below .500 in a ten game stretch for the first time this season. The Storm will be without Jace Foskey for the next two games as he serves a two game suspension for boarding.

 

Omaha (26-10-2-1) will look to stay red hot tonight and increase its lead in the USHL standings. The Lancers are 11-3-2-0 away from Ralston Arena this season and have only lost one game in regulation in the last 10 games. Omaha is the only team in the USHL with a winning percentage above 70% entering tonight’s game (.705%). Filip Suchy has 21 goals and 21 assists on the season and is currently leading Omaha in goals and points (42). Cole Gallant leads Omaha with 26 assists. Goaltenders Zach Driscoll and Vincent Purpura are each giving up less than 2 goals a game on average. Driscoll is 15-5-1-0 on the season with a 1.81 GAA. Purpura has an overall record of 9-1-1-1 and a GAA of 1.92.

 

The game tonight will be the first of a three game week for the Storm as the team travels to Fargo for a two game weekend series on Friday and Saturday. Tonight’s Valentine’s game will include wine specials and registration for a chance to win a meet and greet with Head Coach Anthony Noreen. Additionally the game sponsor Nebraska Lottery will be giving away lottery tickets for the first few fans who attend the game.
