Kearney, NE. – The Tri-City Storm have announced the signing of defenseman Ruben Rafkin of Turku, Finland to a tender agreement for the 2018-2019 season. Rafkin, is committed to the University of Denver and will be eligible for the 2020 NHL Draft.
Rafkin, will turn 16 on Monday, and is the first tender signee of the Tri-City Storm this season. He will be on next year’s roster for Tri-City. President of Hockey Operations Steve Lowe said, “Ruben Rafkin is a puck moving defenseman who has a dynamic offensive ability. He is a world class player for his age and he will represent Finland in many future international tournaments. Rafkin has the drive to compete and the will to work to get better and for those reasons we have chosen to sign him to a tender. We are proud to welcome Ruben to the Tri-City Storm family”
Rafkin is currently playing for the South Kent School in South Kent, Connecticut. He has skated in 38 games for both the U16 and midget programs at South Kent this season. Rafkin has recorded 9 goals and 25 assists with the midget program this season, and also has one goal and two assists in four games with the U16 team.
The USHL tender process allows teams to sign up to two 2002 birth year players prior to the 2018 USHL Phase I Draft. This is the first tender signing for the Tri-City Storm this season. The signing will replace the Storm’s 1st round draft choice at the 2018 USHL Phase I Draft.
