Preview: Storm look to close out 2017 with a victory

Green Bay, WI. – The Tri-City Storm look to respond tonight in Green Bay following a 5-4 shootout loss last night. The loss was the first overtime or shootout loss for Tri-City this season and dropped the team to 17-6-0-1 on the year. The Tri-City Storm can take sole possession of 1st place in the USHL standings with a win tonight and a Fargo regulation loss in Sioux Falls. Tonight’s game is the last contest of the 2017 calendar year for the Storm and the last game of a three game road trip. The Storm return home on January 5th in a matchup against Sioux City.

Tri-City (17-6-0-1) enters tonight’s matchup in 2nd place in the USHL standings. The Storm recorded a point in last night’s shootout loss in Green Bay and now trail league leading Fargo by a single point. Last night, Tri-City scored the first goal of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd periods but fell in a shootout to the Gamblers. Tyler Madden scored two goals for the Storm in the loss. Madden continues to lead Tri-City with 9 goals scored on the year.


Tri-City has not lost back to back games this season and will need to defeat Green Bay tonight to keep that streak alive. The Storm are 5-1-0-1 against teams from the Eastern Conference entering tonight’s game. Green Bay now holds a six game winning streak over the Storm. Tri-City’s last win over Green Bay came on October 17th, 2014 in a 4-0 shutout of the Gamblers at the Viaero Center. December 31, 2003 was the last time the Storm won a road game played on New Year’s Eve. Tri-City defeated the Sioux Falls Stampede that night by a score of 5-2. Despite the loss last night, Tri-City has captured 9 of a possible 10 points in game’s that have required overtime or shootout hockey this season.


Tyler Madden, acquired in a trade with Central Illinois on December 11th, has had a major impact on the team in his first two games played with the Storm. Madden scored the game winning goal earlier this week in a 3-2 road win in Lincoln and recorded two goals in last night’s 5-4 shootout loss in Green Bay. Madden was named the 1st Star of the Game on Thursday in the Storm’s win over Lincoln. He also picked up 2nd Star honors in last night’s loss for his two goal effort. The Northeastern Huskie commit currently leads all USHL rookies in shots on goal with 66 on the season.


Tri-City has been without goalie Filip Larsson for the past four games due to his participation in the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship in Buffalo, New York. Larsson leads the USHL in every major goaltending statistical category and was named to Sweden’s tournament roster on December 6th. Sweden is currently 3-0 in the preliminary round of the event and plays Russia tonight at 7:00pm CT. Yesterday, Larsson made 20 saves on 22 shouts in Sweden’s 7-2 rout of Switzerland. The game marked his debut in the tournament. Sweden has clinched a spot in the quarterfinal round of the event. The tournament will conclude on January 5th, 2018.
