Storm acquire multiple draft picks in trade

Posted 1 years 254 days ago ago by Kendall Grayson

Kearney, NE. – The Tri-City Storm have acquired a pair of draft picks from the Des Moines Buccaneers in exchange for defenseman Tony Malinowski. Tri-City has acquired a 1st round USHL Phase II draft pick and a 10th round USHL Phase I draft pick from Des Moines.

The trade is the first midseason traded completed by the Storm this season. Malinowski, 18, from Clarkston, Michigan skated in six games this season with Tri-City prior to the trade. His lone point came on October 13th in a win over Sioux City when he recorded an assist on the first goal of the game. Malinowski has been given a “C” rating by NHL Central Scouting, indicating that he could potentially be a middle or late round draft selection at this year’s NHL Draft in Dallas, Texas. Malinowski is currently committed to Minnesota State.

“We wish Tony all the best in his future endeavors and his hockey career. One of the goals of the USHL is to allow players to achieve maximum skill development at the highest competitive level of junior hockey and we as an organization felt that this was in the best interest for Tony and his continued on ice development. Based on our current defensive core, we believe that this trade will benefit both parties and allow Tony to reach his goal of playing for Minnesota State- Mankato.” – Tri-City Storm President of Hockey Operations Steve Lowe

The two picks Tri-City acquired can be used in the 2018 USHL Draft. The draft is completed in two phases and allows each USHL to accumulate future prospects. The Phase I draft is open to U-17 players and is also known as the “USHL Futures” draft. The second phase of the draft is open to junior hockey players of all ages. Today’s trade will give the Storm a 1st round pick in that draft, and a 10th round pick in the “Futures” draft.
