Storm score 3 power play goals, roll past Lincoln 6-1
Kearney, Neb. – The Tri-City Storm continued their early season success, dispatching rival Lincoln 6-1 Friday night at the Viaero Center. Tyler Ward compiled a multiple goal game, while Filip Larsson rejected 31 of 32 Star shots to preserve the victory.
Tri-City used the home crowd to its advantage with an opening period goal from Brian Hawkinson that would set the tone for things to come. Hawkinson’s goal at 15:51 of the 1st period was assisted by Bryan Yoon and Hugo Blixt.
The 2nd period would see two additional Storm goals from Connor McMenamin and Adam Goodsir to increase the Tri-City lead to 3-0. The goal from McMenamin was scored at the 13:58 mark of the middle frame, assisted by Michael Maloney and Brian Hawkinson. Adam Goodsir would strike moments later with a power play tally assisted by Mike Koster.
Tyler Ward scored his first of the night and second of the season at 5:32 of the 3rd period, on the power play. Bryan Yoon added his second assist of the night on the goal with Connor McMenamin providing the secondary assist. The game stood at 4-0 Tri City when Gustaf Westlund broke through for the lone Lincoln goal of the night at 8:46 of the 3rd. Tyler Ward provided his second goal of the night at 16:52 with an assist from Johnny McDermott. The final goal of the evening was scored at 18:50 of the 3rd period by Joey Cipollone and was the 3rd power play goal of the night for the Storm. Bryan Yoon added his third assist of the game, while Tyler Ward picked up his third point of the night on the primary assist.
Once again, Filip Larsson was solid in between the pipes, turning aside 31 of Lincoln’s 32 shot attempts.
He improved to 5-1 on the season and leads the USHL in goaltender wins.
The hot start from Tri-City continues as they match the 2003-2004 team as the only Storm squad to post 5 wins in their first 6 games to start a season. The Storm are back in action tomorrow night as they battle the Musketeers in Sioux City.
