Kearney, Neb. – The Tri-City Storm has acquired forward Wyatt Bongiovanni from the Des Moines Buccaneers in exchange for forward Collin Rutherford and a second round, Phase I draft pick in the 2017 USHL Draft, Head Coach and General Manager Bill Muckalt announced Friday.
Bongiovanni (pronounced: BON-gee-oh-VAH-nee) skated in 57 games for the Buccaneers last season, contributing three goals and 14 points. The 5-foot-11, 174-lb. forward hails from Birmingham, Michigan and was the third overall pick by Des Moines in Phase I of the 2015 USHL Draft. The 17-year-old scored one goal in six games against Tri-City last season.
“We think Wyatt is a player that fits the needs of our organization and we’re excited to bring him on board,” said Muckalt.
The Storm acquired Rutherford on October 28, 2015 from the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. In 37 regular season games with Tri-City, the Dartmouth commit had four goals and seven points. Rutherford added an assist in six Clark Cup Playoff games.
“We want to thank Collin for all his contributions,” Muckalt explained. “He’s a fantastic person and player. Deals are never easy and we wish him the best of luck as he continues onward.”
Prior to his USHL career, Bongiovanni played in suburban Detroit, suiting up for Little Caesars Bantam in 2012-13, Belle Tire Bantam in 2013-14 and Honeybaked U16 in 2014-15. With Honeybaked, Bongiovanni tallied five goals and 13 points in 26 games.
Bongiovanni represented the United States Under-17 Select Team at the 2015 Five Nations Tournament.
Tickets for the Tri-City Storm’s home preseason game on Friday, September 2 against the Lincoln Stars are on sale at the Viaero Center Box Office.
The game begins at 7:05 p.m. and is the Storm’s first since winning the Clark Cup over the Dubuque Fighting Saints in May. Admission is free for season ticket holders and $5 for the public.
