Omaha, Neb. – The Des Moines Buccaneers bested the Tri-City Storm in a pair of preseason scrimmages Saturday at Ralston Arena’s Auxiliary Rink. Tri-City fell, 2-0, in the morning contest. In the afternoon session, the Storm scored the first goal but yielded the last four goals and lost, 4-1.
The squads played two games, each with a pair of 25-minute halves and a running clock.
Charlie Kelleher scored the Storm’s goal in the second scrimmage, assisted by Alex Limoges.
Game 1: DM 2, TC 0
Mareks Mitens, making his Storm debut, held the Buccaneers off the scoreboard for the first 45 minutes before the Buccaneers struck for a pair of goals in the final five minutes.
Mitens, born in 1997, is from Ventspils, Latvia and playing his first North American season.
Ronnie Attard made his Tri-City debut as well. The defenseman hails from White Lake, Michigan and played for Victory Honda U16 last season.
Forward Wyatt Bongiovanni, acquired from Des Moines in exchange for Collin Rutherford in August, played his first game against his former club.
Game 2: DM 4, TC 1
The Storm scored the first goal of the second game with 12:40 left. Charlie Kelleher backhanded the puck from the left circle and it trickled in. Alex Limoges received the assist.
Kelleher, the Storm’s first-round pick in Phase II of the 2016 USHL Draft, has three points (2g, 1a) in three preseason games.
Limoges played in his first preseason game of the season. The 18-year-old forward hails from Winchester, Virginia and is Tri-City’s leading returning scorer (14g, 25a, 39 pts).
Des Moines tied the game, 1-1, one minute later. With eight minutes left, the Buccaneers took the lead for good.
Dayton Rasmussen, a returning goalie from Eden Prairie, Minnesota, played a spotless first frame.
Coming off a 2016 Clark Cup Championship, Tri-City kicks off the home schedule with Championship Night on September 30 at 7:05 p.m. vs. Sioux City. The Storm will raise its Clark Cup Championship Banner and give away a special championship pennant to the first 1,000 fans. Presented by Viaero Wireless, Championship night will include a pregame ceremony to honor last season’s championship team as well as tributes throughout the night.
