Newcomers guide Storm to 3-2 win

Ralston, Neb. – Three first-year Storm players scored, leading the Storm to a 3-2 win against the Team USA U18s Saturday at Ralston Arena. 

Wyatt Bongiovanni tallied the game-winning goal early in the second, while Danny DiGrande and Blake Coffey also added their first Storm goals. 

Dayton Rasmussen won for the second straight day, making 27 saves and six in the final frame. 

The Storm is 2-0 in the Fall Classic entering its final preseason game against Waterloo on Saturday at 8:00 p.m.

A pair of newcomers put the Storm up, 2-0, in the opening 10:05. First, Blake Coffey stepped to the high slot and shot the puck past St. Cyr for Tri-City’s first goal at 4:18. A first-year defenseman born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Coffey comes to the Storm from the OJHL’s Newmarket Hurricanes.

Next, Danny DiGrande received a pinball pass from Alex Limoges and wristed the puck to the right bar and in. DiGrande hails from Macomb, Michigan and played 37 games for the Muskegon Lumberjacks last season. 

Team USA’s David Farrance scored on the man advantage with 5:43 left in the first to bring the Americans within a goal after the first 20 minutes. 

The Storm entered the third with a one-goal edge, 3-2. With 6:35 gone in the middle frame, Wyatt Bongiovanni tallied by flipping the puck at the right slot and in. Monte Graham devised the play by ripping the puck through the bottom of the circle to Bongiovanni. Joe Cippolone received the second assist. 

The Storm wraps up its preseason schedule on Saturday, September 10 at 8:00 p.m. vs. Waterloo at Ralston Arena’s Auxiliary Rink. The game is a rematch of the 2016 Western Conference Finals, which the Storm won in five games. Watch the game atushl.fasthockey.com. The regular season kicks off on Friday, September 23 at Lincoln. Coming off a 2016 Clark Cup Championship, Tri-City kicks off the home schedule with Championship Night on September 30 at 7:05 p.m. vs. Sioux City.
