Lincoln, Neb. – The Tri-City Storm opened the 2016-17 regular season with a 3-1 win against the Lincoln Stars Friday at the Ice Box. Monte Graham and Joe Cipollone scored for Tri-City in a 59-second span early in the second, putting the Storm up by three.
Linus Weissbach also tallied for Tri-City. Eight Tri-City players had points.
The early lead allowed the Storm to find its groove. Dayton Rasmussen made 17 stops through the first two periods. The returning goalie added nine third-period stops to finish with 26 saves. Cayden Primeau took the loss with 28 stops.
The Storm has won four straight season openers, a streak that started September 28, 2013 against Lincoln. The Storm’s weekend continues at Sioux Falls tomorrow, Saturday, September 24.
An early second-period eruption keyed the Storm to a 3-0 lead. First, at 1:49, Monte Graham knocked the puck over Primeau’s pads with two whacks. Justin Dixson and Wyllum Deveaux earned assists. Graham is one of nine returning players on Tri-City. Last season, the 18-year-old from Hanover, Massachusetts scored three goals and eight points.
Two shots and 59 seconds later, Tri-City tallied again. Under heavy pressure, Primeau lost sight of the puck at the right post and Joe Cipollone dribbled the puck in on a wraparound. Josiah Slavin assisted on the tally.
The Storm ended the second leading, 3-0. Lincoln’s Chayse Primeau scored halfway through the third for the Stars’ only tally.
Linus Weissbach connected on the first goal with 4:56 left in the first. Sneaking to the front of the net, the Swedish-born forward received a pass from Adam Goodsir. Wyatt Bongiovanni crashed to the right corner to create space for Goodsir’s pass.
