CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – For the second night in a row the Tri-City Storm (20-17-6, 46 pts) ended the longest active winning streak in the league, as the Storm beat the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders (24-15-3, 51 pts) on Saturday night, 3-2 in overtime. Carsen Chubak made 39 saves in the win and made a total of 73 saves on 75 shots in the last two games for the Storm.
After a scoreless first period, the Storm scored the opening goal 3:30 into the second period. Brett Mohler passed the puck in front of the net to Jaden Schwartz, who scored on the power play. Radoslav Illo earned the other assist on Schwartz’s 23rd goal of the season.
Cedar Rapids scored at the 7:16 mark in the second period, as David Boehm tied the game at 1-1.
The RoughRiders took the lead in the third period on Steven Hensley’s right-point shot that snuck past Chubak.
The Storm tied the game with 8-minutes left in regulation, as Illo scored on the power play from Luke McManus and Schwartz. It was Illo’s 17th goal of the season and third in the past two games.
Maxwell Tardy scored the overtime winner 3:40 into the extra-period, as Schwartz fired a shot that RoughRider goalie Cody Campbell could not control and popped out to Tardy who ended the game with his 11th of the season.
The Storm ended Cedar Rapids 7-game winning streak and now are seven points in front of the Sioux City Musketeers for the fourth and final playoff spot in the West Division.
Chubak (14-12-6) made 39 saves on 41 shots in the win. Campbell (11-5-1) made 23 saves on 26 shots in the overtime loss for the RoughRiders.
Tri-City on the power play was 2-4, while Cedar Rapids was 0-6 with the man-advantage.
The Storm will be home on Friday night against the Lincoln Stars for the annual Pack-It-In-Purple night at the Viaero Event Center.
Notes: Tri-City is 13-4-2 when scoring the first goal this season… The Storm special teams was outstanding this past week, as the power play was 6-11 and the penalty kill was 17-17… Illo had three goals and two assists in the three games on the road this past week
