- Game Summary

KEARNEY, Neb. – Led by a combined 200-penalty minutes and Jaden Schwartz’s four-point night, the Tri-City Storm (21-17-6, 48 pts) beat the Lincoln Stars (12-25-6, 30 pts) 5-2 on Friday night at the Viaero Event Center. The win moves the Storm to nine points ahead of fifth place Sioux City.

The Storm scored the opening goal in the first period at the 13:18 mark, as Mitch Hughes scored his second goal of the season. Tucker Long and Schwartz assisted on the goal that gave Tri-City the lead at the first intermission.

Carsen Chubak made 15 saves in the first period for the Storm to keep the Stars off the scoreboard.

Brodie Reid scored his 15th goal of the season for the Stars on the power play at the 6:01 mark in the second period, which tied the game at 1-1.

Schwartz scored a power-play goal that gave the Storm the lead back at the 14:52 mark in the second period. Luke McManus gave the puck to Schwartz, who skated down the left-side of the ice and wristed the puck over Lincoln goalie Matt Green’s glove-side, banked off the far post and into the goal.

After Schwartz’s 24th goal of the season, a fighting fiasco sparked between the two rivals.

After Chubak was run into in the Storm goalie crease, a line brawl ensued resulting in 170-minutes of penalties. The brawl included a fight between Chubak and Lincoln goalie Jared Coreau. Coreau replaced Matt Green for 24-seconds before the fight with Chubak.

The Storm scored again in the third period, as Tucker Brockett scored his ninth of the season 4:15 into the final period. Brett Mohler and Branden Fisher earned the assists on the game-winning goal.

Tyler Amburgey increased the lead for the Storm to 4-1 on the power play, as Amburgey scored his second of the season 11:48 into the period. Radoslav Illo and Schwartz picked up the assists on the goal.

Lincoln’s Kyle Gibbons scored his 10th goal of the season to cut the deficit in half at the 14:46 mark in the third period.

Mohler capped off the scoring with an empty-net/short-handed goal at the 16:22 mark to give the Storm a 5-2 victory. Schwartz and McManus picked up the assists.

Chubak started the game and made 23 saves on 24 shots, however due to the fight with Coreau was ejected from the game. Steven Bolton (7-5-0) picked up the win in relief of Chubak with 15 saves on 16 shots. Matt Green (6-11-3) made 22 saves on 26 shots in the loss for the Stars. Coreau did not face a shot in 24-seconds of action.

Tri-City on the power play was 2-4, while Lincoln was 1-7 with the man-advantage.

The Storm will travel to Sioux City on Saturday to play the Musketeers. Tri-City will be home next Friday night against the Green Bay Gamblers.

Notes: Tri-City is 14-4-2 when scoring the first goal this season… The Storm special teams in the last four games have been stellar with the power play 8-15 and the penalty kill 23-24… Schwartz takes over the USHL scoring lead and is one point away from tying the Storm record of 69 points in a single season held by Bill Thomas
