Who’s the Best Playmaker in the USHL?

Jan 7

Sometimes it’s easy to say who the best playmaker is in any league, if you base that on the assists column. However, it’s tough to do this because so many players have a good amount of secondary assists.

What if we took away the second assist from the assist stat and only took the primary assist (or known as the first assist)?

This would tell us a bit more…

RK PLAYER TEAM Position GP Assists
1 Tynan, T.J. Des Moines Forward 30 32
2 White, Matt Omaha Forward 28 29
3 Schwartz, Jaden Tri-City Forward 29 29
4 Haula, Erik Omaha Forward 28 28
5 Kuchin, Andrei Chicago Forward 29 25
6 Lindblad, Matt Sioux Falls Forward 25 22
7 Leivermann, Corey Fargo Forward 29 22
8 Walters, Ryan Des Moines Forward 30 21
9 Aneloski, Bryce Cedar Rapids Defense 30 21
10 Voran, Michael Sioux Falls Forward 28 20

RK PLAYER TEAM 1st A. 2nd A. Assists
1 Schwartz, Jaden Tri-City 21 8 29
2 Tynan, T.J. Des Moines 20 12 32
3 Haula, Erik Omaha 19 9 28
4 White, Matt Omaha 17 12 29
5 Kuchin, Andrei Chicago 16 9 25
6 Lindblad, Matt Sioux Falls 14 8 22
7 Walters, Ryan Des Moines 14 7 21
8 Aneloski, Bryce Cedar Rapids 14 7 21
9 Voran, Michael Sioux Falls 14 6 20
10 Leivermann, Corey Fargo 13 9 22

RK PLAYER TEAM 1st A. 2nd A. Assists
1 Tynan, T.J. Des Moines 20 12 32
2 White, Matt Omaha 17 12 29
3 Haula, Erik Omaha 19 9 28
4 Kuchin, Andrei Chicago 16 9 25
5 Leivermann, Corey Fargo 13 9 22
6 Schwartz, Jaden Tri-City 21 8 29
7 Lindblad, Matt Sioux Falls 14 8 22
8 Walters, Ryan Des Moines 14 7 21
9 Aneloski, Bryce Cedar Rapids 14 7 21
10 Voran, Michael Sioux Falls 14 6 20

RK PLAYER TEAM 1st A.% 2nd A.% Assists
1 Schwartz, Jaden Tri-City 72.4 27.6 29
2 Voran, Michael Sioux Falls 70.0 30.0 20
4 Haula, Erik Omaha 67.9 32.1 28
5 Walters, Ryan Des Moines 66.6 33.4 21
7 Aneloski, Bryce Cedar Rapids 66.6 33.4 21
3 Kuchin, Andrei Chicago 64.0 36.0 25
6 Lindblad, Matt Sioux Falls 63.6 36.4 22
8 Tynan, T.J. Des Moines 62.5 37.5 32
9 Leivermann, Corey Fargo 59.1 40.9 22
10 White, Matt Omaha 58.6 41.4 29

The above table shows that not only does Jaden Schwartz lead the USHL in primary assists, but he also has the best percentage of primary assists.

I believe Schwartz is the best passer in the league and should be known as the top playmaker. However, I believe that Matt White is the top player in the league right now, yet Schwartz has plenty of time to change that thought.

Schwartz makes players around him better and has been instrumental in Brett Mohler’s offensive production. Mohler has become an offensive threat for the Storm and might be one of the players in the USHL to watch in the second half of the season.

Be sure to tune into all three games on Classic Hits 98.9 FM this week 15-minutes before puck drops for the Viaero Wireless Pre-Game Show.

The Storm battle the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders at home Friday (7:05pm), the Sioux Falls Stampede on Saturday in Sioux Falls (7:05pm) and Cedar Rapids again Sunday at home (5:05pm).
