No Place Like Home

Dec 10

Written by: Skip Berry

The saying is true, “There’s no place like home.”

After a long month of November to disremember, one that included 17 of the 30 days away from Kearney, the Storm players and coaching staff are resting better at night in their own beds.

The Storm will play all eight games in the month of December in the state of Nebraska, and six games here in Kearney.

No overnight trips for the Storm to go on, which means the team can get full use of practices and off-ice workouts. (When you’re on the road, these things often get overlooked.)

Tri-City is prepping for another two-game home series this weekend, as the Storm battle the Omaha Lancers on Friday night and challenges the Des Moines Buccaneers on Saturday afternoon.

The top four scoring leaders in the United States Hockey League will a make their appearance in the Viaero Event Center. Currently, the top four are Matt White (Omaha, 40 points), Erik Haula (Omaha, 35 points), T.J. Tynan (Des Moines, 35 points), and of course, Jaden Schwartz (Tri-City, 28 points).

In fact, no two players in the league have been as big of a threat as has the pair of forwards for the Lancers. Both, White and Haula, have been exceptional players putting up numbers that have looked ridicules.

White has averaged two-points per contest through his first 20 games, and he’s on pace to score 116 points this season, which could be the first player to break the 100-point barrier since former Des Moines Buccaneer Peter Fregoe did that feat in 1998-99.

Already committed to Univ. of Nebraska-Omaha, White could also set a couple records in the process, one that would include assists in a season. Right now, White is on pace for 73 helpers, which would be six shy of the record set by Tim Ferguson in 1985-86 with Sioux City.

While it is well documented that not getting drafted to the NHL isn’t the end of the ultimate dream for most players, White is proving that he could be a sleeper in a free agent pick by some NHL club down the road after he finishes a couple seasons in college.

Former Storm star, Christian Hanson, was never drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs. However, he was a product of solid development in juniors and college (Univ. of Notre Dame) that propelled his game to the NHL and signed a free-agent deal with the Leafs at the end of his senior year last season.

Goes to show people that you can never stop believing in dreams, especially since dreams are never dead. Sometimes the course isn’t the same as the rest.

The Storm is looking for their ninth win of the season Friday night against the Lancers. Hopefully, I start my beard before Christmas.

Be sure to tune into the game on UNK’s – KLPR 91.3 FM at 6:30pm for the Viaero Wireless Pre-Game Show.
